Ambitious Rugby League Club Mancunians have appointed David Abel as head coach to their Wheelchair Rugby League team.
Pemberton-based Abel landed the role ahead of a strong list of candidates and impressed the plans that he presented and his coaching philosophy.
“I’ve been involved in wheelchair rugby league for a number of years now as a match official but I wanted another insight into the game and also to help a developing team with a new outlook on the way they want to go. I thought it was a great opportunity to take and one not to be missed.” He said.
Abel and his family are steeped in rugby league and he is going to bring his proud family values with him to the club.
“I’ve played rugby league since the age of five for various clubs around the north west. My father has played and he also referees both running and wheelchair rugby. My mum is involved on the referee’s society of Leigh, of which I’m also a member.”
He continued, “My three children do a lot of junior rugby at the minute and have tried manoeuvring wheelchairs, there is definitely progression!
“On my wife’s side of the family, they like rugby as well. My wife is looking at coming onboard too.”
The season is set to get underway on 17th March and Abel has already started to make his mark on the club by arranging a Wheelchair Rugby Taster session for Sunday Feb 11th.
“We are looking at making some steady progress. Every session is a learning curve and every day is a learning curve, particularly on the wheelchair side of things but we’ll set some targets and hopefully we can achieve them.”
Speaking of Abel’s appointment Mancunians Director, Stef Hopewell said, “We are pleased that Dave has agreed to join us and we’ll give him all the support that we can to ensure both he and the team progresses this year. He comes into the role fresh of ideas and is keen to test himself.”
“His outlook fits perfectly into our philosophy of being a family club and it’s fantastic to have another addition to the Mancunians family alongside the several teams that we have at the club including our under 7’s and under 9’s rugby teams – a wheelchair rugby team!
