Manchester's Dual Code Rugby Club

Fitness and Desire is The Key, says Bible Studying Burr

Mancunians Captain, Mike Burr isn’t the only person making an exit from the UK this week, but he’s happy that his team are in good hands and that the fitness and desire of Manchester’s Rugby League club is the secret to their success this year.

Burr, who departs to northern New South Wales in Australia this week for a six-month bible study course and to join up with Byron Red Devils to hone his rugby league skills, says that the fitness and desire of Mancunians is what is helping them to win games.

“If we had’ve been playing this game last year we would probably have struggled to compete” Said Captain Burr after Saturday’s win against Bold Miners. “But our superior fitness levels are allowing us to compete longer and the desire and self-belief that we have means that we can turn games around, even when we fall behind”

“People like Jesse Fay, and Adam Lacey and pivots Danny (Child), Luke (Turner) and Mark (Farrell) have an enormous influence on how we play. Being a forward I obviously favour the forwards union but the way they controlled the game in the second half was the key to our success”

Mancunians saw off a spirited showing from rugby league heartland club, Bold Miners of St Helens on Saturday by 6-16 despite Mancs falling behind early in the game and Burr says, even that they impressed, there is still work to do.

“It was a good showing today but, we do need to keep our shape in attack and keep the pressure on. We’re not the finished article yet and we need to keep going through the motions to keep the pressure on.

And Burr says that he will be slightly emotional when he steps on to the plane to travel to Australia. “We are one, this year.” He said, referring to how tight knit the Mancunians team is this year. I’m going to miss not seeing the lads win and not being able to be part of it but I am really looking forward to testing myself and looking forward to the challenge of footy in a different country. We’ll see how it is different and I am looking forward to a new challenge and testing myself”.
